Polymyositis: This is characterized by general feeling of discomfort, fatigue, muscle aches with tenderness to touch and weakness with loss of strength of muscles close to the trunk. Climbing stairs and getting up from chair can be difficult tasks initially. As the condition progresses, even swallowing or lifting the head from the pillow become quite challenging.
Trigger points are discrete, focal, hyperirritable spots located in a tight band of skeletal muscle. They produce pain locally and in a referred pattern and often accompany chronic musculoskeletal problems. Acute trauma or repetitive micro trauma may lead to the development of stress on muscle fibers and the formation of trigger points. About 23 million persons, or 10 percent of the U.S. population, have one or more chronic disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Myofascial pain syndrome is a common painful muscle disorder caused by myofascial trigger points. Trigger-point injection is indicated for patients who have symptomatic active trigger points that produce a response to pressure and create a pattern of referred pain. Trigger point injection can effectively inactivate trigger points and provide prompt, symptomatic relief. Trigger points are injected by Dr. Olaf using a small guage needle with SARAPIN, lidocaine and/or saline. Relief is often felt right after the treatment or within 24 hr. Injection therapy may be repeated 2-3 x a week for up to 6 weeks for maximum benefit.
